The Bears lackluster efforts in the preseason continued tonight with a 21-10 beatdown by the Cincinatti Bengals in Cincinnati. The Bengals steamrolled through the Bears defense on the first drive and got down to the 1 yard line. Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton then sneaked in for a 1 yard touchdown run in which he hurt his neck. He was replaced by former Alabama star A.J. McCarron who continued to dissect the Bears going 12-17 for 149 yards and a touchdown. Despite their 2-1 preseason record, the Bears can’t score, tackle, or stop committing awful penalties. All signs of a bad team.

The offense was missing their 4 top receivers in Alshon Jeffrey, Eddie Royal, Marquess Wilson, and Kevin White and it showed but there lies deeper issues than that. Beyond Kyle Long and Matt Slauson no one knows what to expect from any of these Bears offensive lineman at the moment. Jay Cutler was sacked twice and hit repeatedly and he only played one possession into the second half. The Chicago first team offense has 5 Robbie Gould field goals and no touchdowns this preseason. Chicago’s only highlights on the evening came when 9th-string undrafted tightend Ify Umodu came in unblocked on a punt, blocked the kick and scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Other than that the game was 21-3 since halftime .

After getting embarrassed by Tampa Bay on Monday night earlier this week, Cincinnati took it to the Bears. And the scoreboard isn’t the only thing that reflected that. Promising young nose tackle Eddie Goldman exited in the second quarter with a concussion. Jeremiah Ratliff injured his ankle and was in a walking boot after the game. Backup quarterback Jimmy Clausen was blasted in the fourth quarter by P.J. Dawson of the Bengals in the fourth quarter. The Bears did not say if Clausen suffered an injury only saying the play knocked him out of the game. Various replay angles looked as if Clausen may have suffered an concussion. Clausen’s awareness when he scrambles appears to be subpar, leaving him susceptible to big hits. He has only had substantial playing time in a few games in his two years here and he has now left 2 of them with injuries while scrambling.

The Bears return home to Soldier Field next week versus the Cleveland Browns. Expect to see a lot of David Fales and Shane Carden at the helm with Clausen ailing. There was nothing to like about the way Chicago played tonight but hopefully they can clean up some things and get healthy for Green Bay in week 1.
