According to MLB.com’s Jesse Sanchez, the Cubs have signed Cuban outfield prospect Eddy Julio Martinez, pending a physical. Martinez had originally signed with the San Francisco Giants, but that ended after they failed to meet Martinez’s 3 million dollar asking price. Martinez is MLB.com’s 4th best international prospect and 2nd best international outfield prospect. Martinez is described as a “hard-nosed” type of player, and shows base-stealing potential. This is a huge pickup for the young Cubs as outfielder Dexter Fowler was only signed to a one-year deal, and centerfield is exactly where Martinez plays. He shows powers to all fields and also brings a patient approach, showing his ability to work counts.

The signing of Martinez adds to an already stacked Cubs farm system, one of the best in the game, that is headlined by Mid-West League prospect of the year Gleyber Torres. It also puts him with a talented group of young Cub minor league outfielders, led by the 9th best outfield prospect Billy McKinney, and 89th best overall prospect Albert Almora. Expect Martiniez to come up as early as the trade deadline next season, which is around the time you could also see Almora.
