About 14 hours ago Matt Eurich of 247 Sports wrote an article on how the Chicago Bears had 17 players on injured reserve totaling $60 million in player salaries. Between Eurich’s article and now, the Bears have also placed wide receiver Eddie Royal on Injured Reserve and his $5 million dollar salary so the Bears are now at 18 players and $65 million. The list of players is staggering. The top 3 quarterbacks, Jay Cutler, Brian Hoyer and Connor Shaw. Former First Round picks Kyle Long, Kevin White and Kyle Fuller. Huge Free Agent signings in Lamar Houston, Danny Travathan, Zach Miller and now Eddie Royal. The amount is staggering especially considering the number does not even reflect that Chicago had Alshon Jeffrey, Jerrell Freeman and Pernell McPhee all miss significant portions of the season via suspension or injury. It is my guess that Cutler, Hoyer, Houston and Eddie Royal will not be back off of this list next year, clearing about $40 million off the books with those 4 players alone. Below is a list as of Monday night of the teams that had the most salary on IR/PUP.
- SD – $42.6M
- NYJ- $39.6M
- Jac- $35.6M
- Hou- $31.3M
- KC – $30.6M
- Mia- $27.6M
As you can see the Bears are beating the next closest team by 20 million in salary. Nothing to be proud of but it explains why the team stinks so bad and can’t finish games right now, as they do not have the players or firepower to do so. All the teams on that top 8 list are woefully bad except for Kansas City and Houston and one can only hope their injuries do not drag them down in the playoffs or else we will be forced to see Tom Brady and the Patriots in the SuperBowl again in Houston.
