The Fire have sent a clear message they have come to play with the big boys this season, they intend to win period. But maybe not the World Cup. They intend to reignite the passion from their championship seasons. The smoldering embers of the teams the past two seasons will exist no more. They are seeking to give long suffering fans something to believe in, something to cheer. There was clear evidence of a newly passionate fan base in the Airport welcome given superstar signing Bastain Schweinsteiger, 500 screaming cheering fans showed up at O’Hare to welcome him to Chicago. I have firsthand knowledge that the scene bordered on insanity.

The Fire brain trust of Nelson Rodriguez and Veljko Paunovic went out during the offseason and got Juninho who won three MLS cups with the LA Galaxy and Dax McCarty who won two Supporters Shields with the New York Red Bulls.. Schweinsteiger has won virtually everything he competed for. He won the 2014 World cup with Germany, eight Bundesliga titles and a UEFA Champions League title with Bayern Munich. According to Schweinsteiger “I like to win and I am used to winning quite a lot.” Given this winning pedigree it would be safe to say that the Fire have gotten players with a winning mentality. The Fire only won eight games last season. But one would think that number will be greatly surpassed this season. The additions of Schweinsteiger, Juninho and McCarty have gained the leadership and killer, win at all costs mentality that has been missing in previous seasons. To be successful this season the Fire will have to learn how to win on the road, Paunovic has the only road win in the last two and a half years.

The Fire will have the first opportunity to see how their new midfield weapons play out on the pitch when they take on the Montreal Impact this Saturday, April 1. The Fire can send a message with a convincing win that this not the same Fire that has finished last two years in a row. They can say this Fire is out to win period, no questions asked, and killer mentality, get it done kind of team.
