The Fire players may not fly fighter planes off of an aircraft carrier like the characters in the movie Top Gun. But they patrol the soccer pitch with same ferocity. The Fire don’t have characters like Maverick, Hollywood, Ice man, Cougar and Merlin. But we do have a Goose who we hope can return to the pitch from injury soon. The Fire does have a Schweinsteiger, McCarty, Nikolic, Solignac and Accam.

Luis Solignac and Nemanja Nikolic both made the MLS Team of the Week after their excellent performance in the Fire’s 3-0 rout of the New England Revolution on Saturday April 15th. Nemanja Nikolic was named player of the week for week 8 for his two goals in the New England game, he has four goals in 6 games. Luis Solignac had two assists in that game and an assist tonight on the only fire goal scored by David Accam. Bastian Schweinsteiger has two goals in 4 matches and assisted on Nikolic’s second goal. The three designated players linked up on that goal when Schweinsteiger passed a great ball to David Accam who beat his defender and passed a perfect ball to Nikolic who scored. Dax McCarty had a Man of the Match performance in the 1-0 victory over the Columbus Crew he set up the lone goal. McCarty has always put in the work on the pitch, defending doing the running to help the Fire retain possession of the ball.

The Fire’s Top Guns are still coming together, but they are partnerships that have sparked the early success the team has had. Unfortunately, the Fire fell to Toronto fell 3-1 to Toronto tonight. But they were still able to find a goal through the link-up of Solignac and Accam. The Fire may not have gotten the result they wanted in Toronto and their poor road record continues, but there are signs that the off season will play a big part if the Fire are to make the playoffs
