The Fire have fallen short so far in their quest to pick up points on the road, Falling 3-1 to Toronto and 2-1 to the New York Red Bulls. They will have another chance as they visit the struggling LA Galaxy on Saturday May 6. The Fire have chosen to look at the positives from the two matches. The New York Red Bulls match saw the return of Dax Mccarty to his former team after the trade last January.
In the game the New York Red Bulls gave up their first goal of the season when Dax Mccarty danced around two defenders and fed a perfect pass to Nemanja Nikolic for his 5th goal of the season. In the game the Fire had 14 shots, six of them on target and 70% overall passing accuracy. The Fire had the better passing accuracy in the final third than the Red Bulls, The Fire had 58% to the Red Bulls 38%. The Fire had the better possession of the ball with 51% compared to 49% for New York. Even though the only statistic that matters didn’t go in the Fire’s favor, the others did favor the Fire. After the match Head coach Veljko Paunovic had this to say about the team. “We are getting better. If we keep the level of play like this, I’m sure that we’re going to win a lot of points on the road.” During the Toronto match the Fire only managed one shot on goal which led to their only goal scored by David Accam, while Toronto had 6 shots on goal three which resulted in goals. The Fire had the better passing and ball possession. But unfortunately the only statistic that matters favored Toronto. The scores may not have favored the Fire, but if you look at the overall picture it favored the Fire.
The New York match was emotional for Dax McCarty as it was his first match against his old team the New York Red Bulls. The fans had a special Tifo for Mccarty to honor him. The team had a special video tribute for him. He assisted on the Nikolic goal. McCarty stayed after the match signing autographs, McCarty said of sticking around for the New York Fans, “I needed to do it. The fans that waited for me, it was more than I ever could have imagined. The people here are just good people. Really loyal.” Paunovic seemed to see some hope after the match as he said, “guys obviously are frustrated with the result, but what I felt today is different from the past. That’s something that makes me feel very good and very optimistic for the future.”
