After a losing skid the Cubs took care of business against the Phillies, winning the last three to take the series 3-1. Let’s look at some of the highlights.

First Inning Runs Are Killing The Cubs

Perhaps the most frusturating thing a team can do is to give up an early lead. Unfortunately, the Cubs are doing this more then any other team. The team has given up 35 runs in the opening frame (33 ER) and the team’s ERA in the inning is an unsightly 10.61. Just this series the team gave up seven ER, which cost them the 1st game. Why this is the case no one knows but hopefully it’s something that doesn’t become a season-long trend.

Miguel Montero Is Stepping Up Big Time

Miguel Montero labored through a tough season last year, where his playing time got diminished after struggling to hit the ball. This time around the veteran catcher is enjoying a great campaign so far. Two more hits yesterday brought his season totals to .385/.405/.641 in limited action. Although Willson Contreras will (and should) get most of the reps behind the plate Montero has been a reliable platoon player thus far.

Kris Bryant Is Raking, Per Usual

Kris Bryant had himself a series. The defending NL MVP went 8-15 with a home run, bringing his season slash line to .321/.417/.563. His sluggish start is a thing of the past, and it appears we’ll be seeing this Bryant for the remainder of the season.

What’s next: The Cubs host the New York Yankees at Wrigley Field for a three-game series, which will mark the returns of former Cubs Aroldis Chapman and most notably Starlin Castro. Let’s hope those two garner the ovations they deserve.
