The Fire extended their unbeaten streak to eleven games with a 2-2 draw in Portland. The Fire were able to earn a road point despite missing Schweinsteiger, McCarty, and Polster who left early in the match due to injury. Arturo Alvarez had a man of the match performance with a cross that was a goal and an assist on Defender Brandon Vincent’s first ever Major League soccer goal. Vincent said after the match “it’s an amazing feeling. Hard to describe. I think it’s just a culmination of a lot of hard work and having guys out there to celebrate with, it’s an amazing feeling.” Head coach Veljko Paunovic thought his team did well in the match. He had this to say after the match, “I think it was great. The game was fantastic and the guys showed a lot of character coming back from the initial lead that Portland had.” We’re obviously not happy with just a point, but we are excited about the character and the way the team played today.” That character and spirit seems to be the difference in this team, that burning desire to win that has been missing among the team and the fans for the last few seasons. Finishing in last place the past two seasons, there was only way to go and that was up, this season all the way to top of the table.

Bastian Schweinsteiger and Nemanja Nikolic were voted into the Fan XI for the MLS all Star game and will line up against Spanish giants Real Madrid. Fire General Manager Nelson Rodriguez had this to say about the Duo being named “in a short period of time Bastian and Nemanja have endeared themselves to Fire Fans through their play and commitment to the club.” “Their excellence has been justly rewarded with first XI honors and we look forward to the two representing our club and city at the All Star Game next month.”

The fire will be taking a break from regular MLS action for the Gold Cup tournament, and will return to regular MLS action on July 22 when they face NYCFC in New York. Fire star player Dax McCarty will represent the United States at the Gold Cup and is it thought that he will be one of the break out stars
