Chicago Fire has acquired former Vancouver Whitecaps defender, Christian Dean. The Fire traded $50,000 in GAM (General Allocation Money) in order to bring Dean to the club, plus an additional $50,000 in TAM (Targeted Allocation Money). Dean’s contract with the Fire ends in the 2018 season and he has an option to extend it to 2019 or even 2020.
Will Christian Dean be replacing Joao Meira or Johan Kappelhof, or will he be on the bench? The Fire’s defense has been solid this year, especially at home. I believe the defense is already the best it can be, sometimes change can mess things up or improve things. We noticed how Brandon Vincent’s injury gave us a scare, but Patrick Doody was still able to accomplish three assists against New England Revolution. Joao Meira is 30 and Johan are sitting at 27 years of age. This new addition can either be a backup for if either of these players become injured or transfer, but we also have Jonathon Campbell on the bench. So how will this addition impact the Fire? Will we possibly see Kappelhof return to his former right back position and see Polster in the midfield to fit Christian Dean alongside Joao Meira, or will someone soon be departing the club and this trade is just to have something to fall back on? Although this season’s defense has been top-notch, we cannot predict what it may be like in 2018. So far this season the men in red have had 9 shutouts and only conceded 24 goals in 22 league matches being the fourth team with fewer goals conceded.
With the Fire’s defense being one of the strongest links of the starting XI, how will the addition of Christian Dean help impact the Chicago Fire and help retrieve not only the Supporter Shield but the MLS Cup which the men in red have not held since 1998.
