It’s taken some time to process but reality has set in.

The Fire took their final curtain call in the playoff knockout round against the New York Red Bulls this past Wednesday, falling 4-0. It was not the fairy tale ending Fire fans wanted to what would have been the cherry on top to what has been a dream season.

The Fire finished in third place overall, a 17 place improvement over the past two seasons and a 24 point improvement over last year, a sure sign of new life at Toyota Park. If the team can add some much needed depth in key positions in the off season who knows this team can achieve in 2018.

In the coming weeks General Manager Nelson Rodriguez and Head Coach Veljko Paunovic will be making roster decisions along with scouting of some key players. It is just this writer’s opinion but the team is in need of someone who can get the ball to Golden Boot Winner Nemanja Nikolic. If this can happen, who knows how many goals the man would be able to score? Additionally Nikolic became only the fourth player in history to win the Golden Boot in 3 different leagues in three different countries.

The rumor mill will be surely be a wild time for the Fire as they attempt to answer some pressuring questions. Will the team go out and make another big splash signing in the transfer market? Will German superstar Bastian Schweinsteiger return for 2018? (Reports are that the Fire are in talks with Schweinsteiger.) If Basti had he not been injured how big of an impact could he have made in 2017/will he make in 2018?

The Fire are still in the running for big league awards: MVP and Newcomer of the year for Nemanja Nikolic, Coach of the Year for Veljko Paunovic, the Fair Play award for the team, as well as the Goal of the Year award for David Accam and his nifty back heel finish, shown below.

There have been new faces this season who have put their pictures in the Fire Family Photo album and stories will be told and retold of their moments on the pitch. Who can forget Will Nikolic’s hat trick in the comeback win against the Philadelphia Union?

So Fire fans, we may have bid adieu to our 20th season celebration, packed up the tifos, flags and scarves and finally recovered our indoor voices, but it won’t be long till we reunite to do it all over again. We will have family reunions, debates on the roster, and our chances in 2018 of winning it all, new faces to welcome. So Fire fans I will not bid you adieu (goodbye), but say “a bientot” (see you soon). It is a French tradition to never say goodbye to those we hold most dear. So my fans, If I have any I will catch you at the start of pre-season, unless of course we should go out and sign Cristiano Ronaldo (ok not going to happen so catch you in 2018).
