In a series of unexpected rumors within the last few days, the Cubs have been linked to Orioles infielder Manny Machado and former Rangers/Dodgers pitcher Yu Darvish.  On paper the Cubs don’t have an immediate opening for Machado in their infield so they’d likely have to part with Addison Russell in a potential trade.  Going into the offseason, the Cubs weren’t expected to pursue either of Darvish or Jake Arrieta, the two top starting pitchers on the free agent front.  So, should the Cubs make either of these moves?

Like I said, Addison Russell will likely be shipped out in a trade for Manny Machado.  Ideally, the Cubs would be able to lock Machado up long term if they are able to swing a trade for him now, but that’s a big question mark.  Is potentially only a year of control over Machado worth four years of control over Russell? I personally don’t think so.  Where I could see a deal working out is if a couple more pieces are added to the mix.  The Orioles have made it clear that they want controllable pitching in return for Machado.  The Cubs have also been looking for controllable MLB-ready pitching.

My suggestion: INF Manny Machado and RHP Brad Brach for INF Addison Russell, RHP Alec Mills (Cubs #13 prospect), and LHP Bryan Hudson (Cubs #18 prospect)

Although Brach is only under control for one more season, he’d be a quality setup option for the Cubs in 2018 at a reasonable salary expected to be under $4 million via arbitration.  Mills, although 26, pitched well in the Arizona Fall League and seems ready for a full crack at the big leagues in 2018.  Hudson was drafted by the Cubs in the third round in 2015 out of high school, so he comes with plenty of upside.

At first glance, I didn’t see why the Cubs would want to pursue a long-term pact with Darvish.  He had a horrid performance in the World Series with the Dodgers and has Tommy John surgery on his resume.  Why wouldn’t the Cubs just go with the more known commodity in Arrieta?  However, after I saw that Jesse Rodgers of ESPN Chicago reported that Darvish may only get a four-year deal, I was a little more intrigued.  It seems that since Darvish has had more injury problems and has more innings on his arm (he pitched several years in Japan) than Arrieta, he may not get the type of money Arrieta will.  Arrieta and super-agent Scott Boras are still insisting on a six or seven year deal pushing $200 million.  If Darvish would settle for a four year deal for around $100 million, I’m all for it.
