Spring is here!  Well, spring training is anyway.  Pitchers and catchers have reported to camp and with their arrival is the arrival of spring.  Cue the montage of blooming flowers and chirping birds.  After a long winter, all is right with the world.  Okay, maybe that’s a bit dramatic, but for baseball fans, things are looking up.

Spring training for every team (and fan) is a time filled with hope.  Right now, anything is possible.  The promise of each new season brings with it the opportunity to build legends and create memories.  The excitement that is felt when the players take the field on Opening Day to the roller coaster of emotions being felt through each at-bat of a playoff race still lay ahead.  That is the hope that each fan has right now.  No matter how good (or bad) your team may be, until the games are played, there is still hope that your team will go all the way—to win it all.  That’s what makes spring training so good.  That is why spring training is important.

While most of the country is still being engulfed by cold weather and grey skies, our boys in blue are set to play under clear skies and sunshine in Mesa, Arizona.  We watch the boys of summer play a children’s game and are reminded of the hope that each new season brings.  We know each season is a long and difficult journey.  At the end of that journey, we all know that there is only one winner.  For 108 years, that winner was not the Chicago Cubs.

Perhaps now the winds of change are ushering in a new era.  There is no doubt that Cubs fans know how to endure long, cold winters, but now, the long winter is over.  The clouds have parted, and the sun is finally shining on the north side of Chicago.
