The Men in red were able to clinch their first win of the 2018 season Saturday night against Columbus Crew. Columbus Crew, who so far have 3 wins and 1 draw this season, received their first loss to Chicago Fire.

Chicago were under significant pressure since they had played 3 games and not won a single one. Many fans are questioning what they have done in the pre-season.

The Fire started the play in a 3-4-1-2 formation, having Bastian Schweinsteiger on the defensive line, and having Brandon Vincent and Drew Conner play as wing-backs. Diego Campos and Alan Gordon had their first starts with the club. Campos looked promising by playing a total of 71 minutes and having 2 shots. Tony Tchani had one of his best matches so far, being a big part of the defense.

The Fire’s first half was great, where Nemanja Nikolic scored the only goal of the match in the 27th minute. Columbus’s Zack Steffen mistakenly passed the ball to the Fire’s 2017 golden boot winner.

While the first half was great, the second half wasn’t fun to watch. If the cross bar wasn’t our friend, we would have lost by at least 2 goals. The Crew’s top scorer Gyasi Zardes had many opportunities to score, one of those hitting the bottom of the cross bar.

Columbus had 64% possession of the ball and 465 accurate passes. Meanwhile, Fire had 35% possession and 229 accurate passes, Columbus having a little over double the pass accuracy.

Chicago Fire played much better this match compared to the previous match. A hard fought win is what they need to help boost their confidence. Richard Sanchez looked more confident in this match, having his first clean sheet and winning with the Chicago Fire.

This is their fourth match of the season, with their record being 1-1-2, they still have a lot to work on. This first win should help with their team morale.

Chicago Fire now have 4 points in the Eastern Conference. Nine points away from Eastern Conference leaders, New York City FC. The Fire will be facing LA Galaxy next week, Saturday April 14th, at home.

The Fire will be looking to defend against LA Galaxy and Zlatan and receive three points before they return on the road.
