Josh Rosen: A Potential Addition to the Bears QB Room
As all Chicago Bears fans know, the Bears have a dilemma at the most important position in all of sports – Quarterback.
Mitch Trubisky took a very noticeable step back in year three, which really puts the Bears in a tough spot. Chicago will have to bring in a few different quarterbacks as competition to findthe right guy to salvage this Super Bowl window.
One possibility is Josh Rosen.
Rosen is currently on the Miami Dolphins and the team plans to bring back Ryan Fitzpatrick, and in all likelihood, draft a quarterback in the first or early second round. With that being said, Josh Rosen will most likely get traded for the second time in his short career thus far. The Bears could snatch up the former first-round pick for a relatively cheap price. Bringing him in could potentially light a fire under Trubisky or Rosen could win the job outright.
Rosen was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals with the tenth overall pick in the 2018 draft but did not play well to start his pro career and was traded after one season. In Arizona, Rosen was sacked the most out of any quarterback in the league and, for the most part, had below-average offensive playmakers around him. He also didn’t have very good coaching to guide him as a first-year quarterback in the NFL. That spells disaster.
He was traded to the Miami Dolphins for a second-round pick in the 2019 draft. The Dolphins ran with Rosen and Fitzpatrick in their QB room this past season. Rosen got the start in weeks three, four, and six, and didn’t light up the world in his starts. The Dolphins were one of the worst teams in the league this past season and had little talent on their roster.
Rosen had much better coaching in Miami than Arizona, but that won’t do much justice if we don’t see him play on the field for an extended period of time.
He’s had some of the worst luck to start his career. Perhaps a change in scenery could jumpstart his career. Just look at Ryan Tannehill with the Tennessee Titans. Sometimes a new team is all it takes.
Josh Rosen could add to the thin quarterback room the Bears currently have. At this time, Trubisky is the only quarterback on the Bears roster (yikes). Realistically, the Bears won’t bring back journeyman quarterback Chase Daniel. The team needs to bring in at least two new quarterbacks to add to the roster.
Rosen has a lot of similarities, like play style and build, to Alex Smith. We’ve seen what Nagy can do with Smith. Nagy helped make Smith a four-time Pro Bowler. Rosen presents a contrasting play style to Trubisky and perhaps the new coaches on staff feel like a more traditional pocket passer might be better for this offense.
The Bears could realistically get Josh Rosen for a fourth or fifth-round pick in this year’s draft. If the guys on staff like him I certainly think this is a move worth making. It’s a low-risk high-reward trade.
For a former top ten draft choice, a fourth or fifth-round pick is a bargain. The Bears should certainly bring in more than one guy as competition for Trubisky, but if the coaches and Pace like Rosen, it’s certainly a risk worth taking.
