As the second week of Chicago Bears Training Camp gets underway, fans can expect more reports of Justin Fields dropping dimes to Darnell Mooney.
Solid chemistry between a quarterback and his top wide receiver is key. As a play breaks down, it’s nice to have a go-to guy downfield who will get open. Matthew Stafford and Cooper Kupp believed so strongly in their connection they began eating breakfast together as soon as Stafford arrived in LA. In Chicago, Fields and Mooney are building to be one of the top storylines of the upcoming NFL season.
They act like twin brothers, constantly competing for everything. Mooney, an actual twin, is familiar with the dynamic and thrives with it. Fields is up for the challenge, as he is glad to stay at the training facility as long as necessary to outwork his receiver for the night.
“I think I’ve said this before, but he pushes me to be better,” Fields said. “I think we push each other. We got together a couple times over the break, and we would come here at 10:30 at night and try to get our timing together.”
The connection transcends off the field, too. According to Dan Pompei of The Athletic, the only time Mooney has gone out on the town in Chicago was when Fields set it up for the team.
Looking at tape from last season, some of Fields’ most memorable throws targeted Mooney. Against the Lions on October 3, 2021, Mooney hauled in 5 receptions for 125 yards. Facing the Steelers on Monday Night Football, Fields led an impressive two-minute-drill effort before sensing pressure, rolling to the left and delivering a perfect touchdown pass to number 11.
With much of the league sleeping on Mooney’s potential, and Fields’ for that matter, it will be exciting to see the duo emerge to the weekly headlines. When it comes time to make your fantasy football picks, you know what to do.
