Contract year Woes

Through five games, Patrick Williams is averaging just four points, three rebounds, and 1.4 assists. Williams has also had two games where he scored zero points. Patrick Williams also shoots 26.7% from the field and 12.5% from three. Offensively, Williams has been terrible; not ideal in a contract year. The Chicago Bulls used the 4th overall selection on Williams in 2020, a move that has not panned out as expected. Unfortunately, throughout three seasons, Williams has not taken the leap expected from him.

The Bulls have needed the presence of an x-factor, someone who could take the offensive load off of LaVine, DeRozan, and Vucevic. Thus far, no one has been able to fill this role for Chicago consistently. Coby White and Patrick Williams both have the opportunity to do so this season, but consistency is required.

What Should the Bulls do with Patrick Williams?

At this point, Billy Donovan should consider bringing Williams off the bench. Starting Torrey Craig or going small with Alex Caruso may give the Bulls a better chance at keeping games competitive early. Craig has shot 48% from the field and 41.75 from three through 5 games. Alex Caruso has been a pest for oppositions, soaring in for rebounds and causing numerous turnovers. Starting Caruso or Craig in place of Williams would boost the starting lineup.

For Patrick Williams, coming off the bench can be ideal. Williams would have the opportunity to lead the Bulls’ 2nd unit. This would give him more scoring opportunities and plays designed for him. If this does not work out, trading Willaims is an option for the Bulls. Trade opportunities could present themselves by the February deadline, but the Bulls have restricted free-agent rights on Willaims. This could lead to a better sign and trade opportunity for the Bulls. Despite frustration, keep in mind just five games have been played. Patrick Williams will have the chance to turn things around, but the execution is on him.
