The Chicago Bulls made a significant move this offseason by trading Alex Caruso for Josh Giddey.
Giddey, a 21-year-old Australian-born guard, is entering his fourth year in the NBA.

Acquiring Josh Giddey

The Oklahoma City Thunder initially drafted Giddey with the No. 6 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. He is known for his strong floor general skills and is a crafty, pass-first guard with impeccable size for his position. This trade indicates the Bulls’ strategy

c move to think younger and retool. With this trade, the Bulls inhale the final year of Giddey’s rookie deal, slated to earn him $8.3 million this season.

The Impending Zach LaVine Trade

The Chicago Bulls are reportedly exploring trade options for their star player, Zach LaVine. LaVine, who is owed nearly $140 million over the next three seasons, has been a key player for the Bulls, but recent reports suggest that a trade involving him could be imminent. Reports even state that LaVine’s relationship with the front office is broken.

The Golden State Warriors reportedly turned down a trade proposal involving LaVine. The proposal involved acquiring Andrew Wiggins and Chris Paul in exchange for LaVine. Unfortunately, Zach LaVine seems to have no value by teams across the league.

DeMar DeRozan Enters Unrestricted Free Agency

DeMar DeRozan, the six-time All-Star, has entered free agency this season. DeRozan’s future is currently in limbo after a successful stint with the Chicago Bulls. Despite his impressive performance in the previous season, where he earned $28.6 million, DeRozan’s market appears to be tepid in the first week of free agency.

There have been reports that DeRozan would like to play in his hometown of Los Angeles. The Miami Heat have also shown interest in DeRozan and are reportedly the “slight favorites” to land him. However, DeRozan is not considering signing for the non-taxpayer midlevel exception (i.e., $12.9 million).

DeRozan’s decision is expected to be a patient one. He could potentially sign a one-year deal and try free agency again next summer when he might have more options, but his time in Chicago is expected to be over.

The Future of the Chicago Bulls Roster

The Chicago Bulls are reportedly considering trading their star center, Nikola Vucevic. There is a “growing belief” around the NBA that the Bulls could consider trading Vucevic if DeMar DeRozan leaves the team in free agency. The Bulls could then lean further into a youth movement and roster retooling. Vucevic, who averaged 18.0 points and 10.5 rebounds in 76 games last season, is signed for three more seasons and will play the 2024-25 season under a cap hit of $20 million.

On the other hand, the Bulls have reached an agreement with Patrick Williams on a five-year, $90 million deal. Despite not living up to expectations since he was the No. 4 overall pick of the 2020 NBA draft, the Bulls have decided to keep him. This contract includes a player option in the fifth year.

The Bulls are investing in their young talent as they navigate this offseason.
