With under two weeks left until the start of training camp, there are currently five first round draft picks that have yet to sign their rookie deals.

Quarterback JJ McCarthy and edge rusher Dallas Turner have not signed their contracts with the Minnesota Vikings. Tackle Amarius Mims has yet to sign with the Cincinnati Bengals. Finally, Caleb Williams and Rome Odunze have not signed their rookie deals with the Chicago Bears.

There isn’t too much cause for concern just yet, but as the timeline until training camp begins shrinks…the media coverage will only continue to grow.

A situation like this is not unusual by any means around the NFL – as you might recall the Chicago Bears dealt with a pro-longed hold out from Roquan Smith back in 2018. It wasn’t until August 13th that Roquan signed his rookie contract, which ultimately kept him out of the entirety of training camp and the first two pre-season games.

Roquan Smith is a plug and play pro bowl linebacker – he proved that when the trade to Baltimore provided an immediate boost to the Ravens defense. His rookie season was no different despite the lack of training camp and pre-season reps. Played in all 16 games, 5 sacks and finished top 10 in the league in tackles.

Despite the linebacker position being more flexible, there was still a concern that Roquan missing camp could have had a detrimental effect that lasted into the regular season.

“But I have full confidence in Vic and his staff that, when he does get here, they’ll get him up to speed. That’s why we all get paid as coaches, to try and help our players out as much as possible and that’s kind of where were at.” – HC Matt Nagy

No one needs to explain the importance of having your QB/WR duo drafted first and ninth overall at training camp. It does beg the question though….what the hell is taking so long?

Signing bonus cash flow? Voiding of guarantees?

After the biggest off-season in organization history, Ryan Poles, just do us all a favor and get it done before it starts to get loud.
