All eyes are on Ben Johnson when he takes the podium, but there was a special—and very justified—interest in what Offensive Line coach Dan Roushar had to say about his guys.
Tough Love for Braxton Jones
What a refreshing hit of tough love—something Bears fans have been craving for years. I’ve said it in plenty of blogs before, but it’s worth repeating: the players have begged for this level of accountability. Do I like hearing that Braxton is struggling? No. But I love that he’s getting honest, unfiltered feedback instead of the Chris Morgan “good enough” rubber stamp.
It’s easy for us fans to pile on Braxton. There’s a reason there’s a left tackle battle in the first place. But the real curveball came when Roushar didn’t stop there.
A Wake-Up Call for Darnell Wright
This one was interesting because it came out of nowhere. We all knew left tackle was a question mark—but I didn’t expect to hear anything negative about Darnell Wright. Technique hiccups? Sure. Adjusting to a new scheme? Okay. But lack of focus and conditioning issues? That’s flat-out unacceptable for a top-10 pick and one of the supposed bedrocks of this offensive line.
Yes, training camp is grueling, but we’re too far along for mental lapses. My hope is that this was the wake-up call Darnell needed, and with enough time left in camp, he’ll lock back in. I have full confidence he will.
Why This Honesty Matters
Now, let me take the glass-half-full angle here. This is exactly what I want to hear out of Halas Hall. Hold our guys accountable—especially the stars. You know why? Because when coaches are willing to admit when it’s bad (something Dweeberflus could never do), I can actually trust them when they say things are good.
Trust Earned Through Consistency
Take Caleb Williams, for example. If you’re deep enough into Bears Twitter to be reading this blog, then you’ve seen the media storm—90% of it negative because that’s what gets clicks.
But when Ben Johnson or Declan Doyle says Caleb is right where he needs to be? I believe them. Because they’ve proven they’ll tell us the truth.
Bottom Line
So, moral of the story:
- Darnell — pick it up, man.
- Everyone else — relax.
This staff has the juice.
