Who’s on the White Sox Labor Day Weekend Call-up List?
Labor Day weekend traditionally marks the official end of summer vacation for millions.
It is a transition in sports, with college football starting during this weekend and the NFL waiting to start the regular season around the corner.
For Major League Baseball, Labor Day weekend marks the final season push with the playoffs in reach for a number of teams.
For other organizations, such as the Chicago White Sox, the push isn’t to make the postseason but to bring up players “for a cup of coffee” in old baseball lingo and give some minor league players a shot at being “in the Show,” albeit for a short period of time.
September is a magical time for many, as the seasons start to change (or at least not be as hot), and for some, chasing a baseball dream to the Major Leagues can become a reality.
Bryan Ramos – Welcome to the Show?
Sometimes, a September call-up to the Show is just an encore audition opportunity, and for Bryan Ramos, the Sox hope that maybe there can be more magic in store for the erstwhile third baseman. Ramos got his chance to play with the White Sox last season and in 99 plate appearances batted a paltry .202 with a .586 OPS. On many rosters, that type of performance is the kiss of death for many big leaguers, but remember that Ramos appeared with the 2024 White Sox, arguably one of the absolute worst teams in Major League history.
Ramos is making a name for himself with Double AA Birmingham and currently has 15 homers and an OPS of .827. With his ability to play both corners in the infield, maybe it’s time to take a second look at Ramos and see what he can do with a September call-up. If anything, a decent performance may get him a spring training invite with the big club or a promotion to AAA Charlotte.
Chase Plymell: The White Sox Front Office May Be Calling Your Cell Phone Soon
Okay, most White Sox fans are going to say, Who the heck is Chase Plymell? I had to do a bit of research myself on this reliever, but what I found was a potential mid-inning right-handed reliever with a really strange arm delivery who could easily make the Sox active roster by September 1st. At 27, Plymell is older, more experienced in the minors, and with 52.2 innings pitched at AAA Charlotte, 33 strikeouts, and a WHIP of 1.22, Plymell may have reinforced his case to become a middle-inning reliever for the Pale Hose.
I like seeing the unconventional pitchers get their chance in the Show, and this is one Sox prospect who is due to get multiple cups of coffee with the big league club.
Braden Montgomery Is Lighting up the Minors – Is He Ready for the South Side?
It’s relatively easy for a good baseball player to make headway in the minor leagues. Still, when the call – that call comes in to join the big league club, many players have proven time and time again that a Double or Triple AAA level of competition is their glass ceiling. For outfielder Braden Montgomery, the minors are just a journey and certainly not the destination for his baseball career.
Braden has been spectacular with AA Birmingham recently, and in 60 plate appearances, he has a .317 batting average with seven doubles and an .889 OPS; that kind of firepower, along with his outfield speed, could dictate a call-up within the next two weeks.
If anything, coming up for a cup of coffee for Montgomery may light the proverbial fire under his career aspirations and move him up the organizational prospect roster for the 2026 season.
