Ben Johnson Just Gets It
Going into what was set to be the Bears’ 6th head coach in 14 years, the pressure was on to turn out some excitement, but also a redemption for George McCaskey and the Bears.
Ben Johnson #1 Option for a Reason
Since firing Lovie Smith in 2012, the Bears have cycled through 5 different coaches, all of whom have flamed out for much of the same reasons.
The Bears then put their foot down for the top option in Ben Johnson and held off fierce competition by the Jaguars and Raiders to do so.
It is not hard to see why. During his tenure as Lions OC, he led a top-5 offense in all three seasons and had Jared Goff playing his best football.
While the Lions’ offense, outside of a week 1 dud, has continued their production, the real optimism still exists with Ben Johnson and what he brings to the table.
Johnson Just Gets It
In a press conference, Johnson had this to say about coaching Caleb Williams and the rest of the team to higher standards.
Johnson said:
“That’s coaching in general. We’re not called to be here to be friends or cheerleaders. We’re here to push, to challenge, to support. There are a number of things the best coaches in my life have really imprinted on me.
And whether I was a player or a fellow coach, I really think that’s important.
“It’s not what the player wants to hear all the time. Sometimes it’s what he needs to hear for us as a team to succeed and for him as an individual to get a little bit better. And you can’t shy away from that.”
Matt Eberflus would have given a non-concrete answer, and fans would be left wondering what exactly it all meant. Not Johnson
Improvement is Happening
The Bears’ offense ranks right around 10th in the league. That is even with a rushing game that is being spearheaded by Caleb as well.
The last time a Chicago Bears offense was this good this early was probably 2013 in Marc Trestman’s first year. Johnson even said that the Bears’ best ball is ahead of them.
Caleb Williams is at the top of the QB list for passing touchdowns. Rome Odunze is following with 4 scores through 3 games. Kmet and Loveland got involved last week and should play vs the Raiders.
DJ Moore didn’t have a whole lot of yards, but did get Williams’ 4th Touchdown, and he and Williams were seen having fun on the bench.
The only thing that Johnson now needs to figure out is how D’Andre Swift can hit a hole cleanly.
