Caleb Williams Is the Greatest Chicago Bears QB of All Time
The cardiac Chicago Bears did it again – scoring 25 points in the 4th quarter to pull off another remarkable comeback win, 31-27, against the Green Bay Packers.
First playoff win for the franchise in over a decade.
First time beating the Packers twice in a season since 2007.
First playoff win against the Packers since 1941 (Bears now hold the playoff head-to-head record 2-1).
Caleb Williams now has SEVEN 4th quarter comebacks – the most in a single season by any QB under the age of 25 in NFL history. Caleb threw for 361 yards in this game, which is the most yards in a playoff debut since Matthew Stafford threw 381 in 2011 (fitting right?). Caleb joined Hall of Famer Kurt Warner as the only quarterbacks in NFL history to throw for at least 350 passing yards and win in their playoff debut. Caleb threw for 184 yards in the 4TH QUARTER ALONE – which is the most passing yards in a single quarter of football in the NFL playoffs since Tom Brady’s 196 passing yards in….you guessed it, the infamous comeback in Super Bowl LI against the Atlanta Falcons.
And of course, while it’s not the 4k passing yards that everyone wanted, Caleb Williams did set the Chicago Bears single-season passing yards record with 3942.
The throw to Rome Odunze on 4th and 8 with 5:28 left in the 4th quarter, down 27-16, arguably couldn’t have been made by any quarterback in NFL history other than Caleb Williams. Rolling to his left, the linebacker chases and clips his ankle, jumping mid-air, contorts his body, and gets enough on the ball to drop it over two defenders and in-between a safety right into Rome Odunze’s bread basket. The body control, the poise, the escapability, the arm strength…no one else in history can do what Caleb Williams can do (and yes, that includes Patrick Mahomes, Cris Collinsworth) Considering the moment – Bears vs. Packers, down 11, 4th down, you don’t convert the Packers will be getting the ball across midfield and will certainly close out the game…might be the single greatest throw any NFL quarterback has made in history.
Jay Cutler certainly does deserve more respect than he typically gets (and so does Mitch Trubisky, quite frankly) – but Caleb Williams has gone to heights no other Bears quarterback has ever seen. Yet, his second season isn’t even completed. From the moment the Bears drafted Caleb Williams number one overall, everyone with eyes knew that talent-wise, Caleb had the highest potential of a quarterback this organization has ever had take the field. The eye-test is one thing, and stats are another…but when you’re already able to combine the eye-test, stats, AND TEAM SUCCESS in just year two, that’s when you have something special.
Perhaps for some it might be too early to crown him, but that’s foolishly living in the past.
