RECAP: Fireworks Display as Fire Rout Sporting KC, 5-0
It was an explosive performance from the Windy City’s finest on Saturday night as the Chicago Fire downed Sporting Kansas City 5-0 at Soldier Field.
A scoreless first half had Fire fans worried about dropping points, but the Men in Red stepped up. A five-goal barrage after the break ensured the Men in Red stayed hot.
They are now unbeaten in six matches across all competitions.
Zinck and Hugo Block Out the Noise
Concerns were mounting heading into Saturday about whether the Fire’s attacking form from 2025 would ever return. While they’ve been incredible defensively, the team’s front line was not without its doubters. Philip Zinckernagel, Chicago’s most productive attacking player last year, was under particular scrutiny. He and Hugo Cuypers combined to put on a second-half clinic against Sporting KC, answering any questions about their form.
The Fire’s dominant duo combined in the most comical of ways to get the go-ahead goal at the 51-minute mark. Cuypers, having drawn a penalty, couldn’t convert from the spot. Zinckernagel bundled the ball over the line, falling down as he did. Five minutes later, and the Dane was back to his brilliant best. He combined with Maren Haile-Selassie and Robin Lod to score a far more attractive goal, finding the far bottom corner with a fine finish.
The third goal was another Zinckernagel-Cuypers creation, but in a far more conventional way than the first. Zinckernagel picked out his talisman with a lovely pass from the wing, before Cuypers slotted it home first-time. After a brief intermission from the two-man show during which Haile-Selassie rounded the goalkeeper to bag a goal of his own, it was back over to Cuypers for more. The latter completed his brace in stoppage time, half-volleying a close-range finish into the back of the net following a corner.
Chicago’s potent pairing had high hopes of earning MLS Team of the Week selections after their spellbinding showings against Kansas City. In the end, Zinckernagel was the only Fire player named to the honorary squad, with Cuypers missing out. Nonetheless, the game felt like a major step in the right direction for the Men in Red’s attack as a whole.
In Fine Form as Schedule Intensifies
It’s hard to remember the last time the Fire were in a better competitive position. They sit 3rd in the MLS Eastern Conference with a game in hand on the top two teams. They’re in the last 16 of the US Open Cup, with a rivalry game against Saint Louis City awaiting on Wednesday.
This season is unique in that it will be interrupted by a lengthy break for the World Cup. Until then, Chicago will contest up to two more cup games and five MLS fixtures. There’s no telling what the team’s form or fitness may be after a summer away.
The remaining spring games are thus vitally important for the Fire’s prospects.
The Men in Red will look to carry their scintillating offensive form past Saturday and into the coming fixtures.
