The Cubs Lineup: A Gauntlet
The wins keep coming for the 2026 Chicago Cubs as they have now won fifteen consecutive games at the best stadium in the world, Wrigley Field.
While this streak continues to grow, the highlight has been the depth of the Cubs’ offense.
It is only natural that during a long period of time in baseball, even the best hitters will not consistently thrive.
But that is a strength for the Cubbies with the way this roster is constructed.
When some players are struggling, others succeed, prompting fans to fly the W Flag at Wrigley.
From the leadoff hitter all the way down to the nine hitter, this lineup can do damage.
During this run, the offense has averaged just over 6 runs per game. The Cubs’ offense is relentless and gets contributions from more than the typical nine-hitter lineup. There are very talented bench pieces that Craig Counsell often leans on. It is fascinating to watch him alter the lineup each game because he has so many reliable options.
Michael Conforto
The most prominent example as of late is Michael Conforto, who has played in twenty-three of forty games this year. Although he may not play in every game, he came up against the Reds with a pinch-hit walk-off home run. Little contributions like that are what have powered this team to one of the best records in the entire league.
Miguel Amaya
While Carson Kelly gets the majority of the starts behind the plate for the Cubs, Miguel Amaya has had a strong start to his 2026 season. He currently has an OPS of .722, which is above the league average.
Moisés Ballesteros
And on top of that, rookie phenom and fan favorite Moisés Ballesteros has contributed on the defensive side as well as doing more than his share at the plate. Ballesteros has started this season with six home runs and an .861 OPS. Many fans believe he can be the next Cubs superstar. The contributions from the Cubs bench have played an immense role in this surge up the standings, but the usual starters have been excellent as well.
The usual seven players that take the field for the Cubs have been nothing short of amazing thus far. Each outfielder has been playing stellar defense, which is to be expected from Ian Happ and Pete Crow-Armstrong. But Seiya Suzuki has shown that he is a quality right fielder, which is challenging to play at Wrigley Field. During his time in the big leagues, Suzuki hasn’t been a great defender, but this year, he has turned a corner. This has elevated the Cubs’ defense to a whole new level, and they won the team Gold Glove Award a year ago.
Looking at the infield’s defense, there are three Gold Glove Award winners in Bregman, Swanson, and Hoerner. These three have been continuing that level of play, and while Michael Busch doesn’t have a Gold Glove yet, he is playing excellent defense. Busch has been one of the best defensive first basemen in the league with four Outs Above Average. That is the second most by any first baseman in the entire league. While great defensively, this group of seven has been stellar at the plate as well.
The numbers speak for themselves: the Cubs’ offense has scored the second-most runs, is sixth in home runs, and is fourth in batting average.
These numbers suggest that this team is not only a great offense, but one of the best in the Major Leagues.
The nine guys that the Cubs put on the lineup card every day are dangerous. Whether it is defensively or offensively, each player can help the Cubs get a win.
Through forty games, the Cubs are tied for the best record in the Major Leagues, and they are just getting started.
