Cubs Offense Still Looking for Answers
A 162-game season tends to have you going through ups and downs, but for Cubs hitters for the last month, it has mostly been down.
The series vs Colorado, in particular, was quite frustrating. At all places, Coors Field is the ballpark to break out of slumps and produce runs.
Instead, it was just more of the same shtick vs a very bad Rockies pitching staff.
Combined, the offense put up 5 runs in the first 2 games of the series. Those inevitably led to another series of losses. Cubs needing to salvage the last game did so with a 9-3 victory.
But there is more that needs to be done.
Situational hitting is the biggest problem for this team. With runners in scoring position (RISP) the Cubs ranks drop from top 10 in OBP and wRC+ to 25th and 29th respectively for each. Ain’t a whole lot of good getting the runners in position if it’s all gonna be wasted by the middle of the lineup not delivering and doing its job.
Going back to 2018, former President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein famously said, “Our offense broke”. That, of course, was the beginning of the end of that old core group.
Now, once again, the Cubs’ offense is going cold at the worst possible time, even after those two 10-game win streaks.
The Cubs need better performance from everyone on the roster, but especially from the guys they are paying a good chunk of change for; it could spell trouble sooner than later.
