Pen to Paper: Robert Lewandowski Signs for Chicago Fire
Months’ worth of rumors and speculation have finally come to an end. Polish superstar Robert Lewandowski has signed for the Chicago Fire.
A two-year contract was negotiated between the club’s front office and the acclaimed striker, who joins on a free transfer from Barcelona.
It’s a massive addition for a club that has recently become one of the most alluring destinations in MLS.
Having narrowly missed out on signing Neymar Jr and Kevin de Bruyne, Fire owner Joe Mansueto finally has his big-name addition.
Lewandowski will occupy the last of three Designated Player slots on the Fire’s roster.
A New Chapter in the Career of a Legend
Lewandowski has about as storied a CV as any player in the modern game. After prolific spells with Znicz Pruskow and Lech Poznan in his homeland, the striker stepped into the mainstream. He spent four years with Borussia Dortmund, scoring 103 goals for the acclaimed German outfit. Lewandowski’s impressive numbers earned him a move to Bundesliga hegemons Bayern Munich. Across eight years in Bavaria, he scored an absurd 344 goals in 375 appearances.
Most recently, the Pole led the line for Barcelona. Despite being well into his 30s when he moved to Spain, Lewandowski bagged 120 goals in just four seasons. However, he fell down the pecking order in his final year with the Blaugrana, starting just 17 games in the 2025-26 campaign. The goal-getter instinct remains ever-present, though, as the 37-year-old still managed 14 goals last season.
Now, Lewandowski begins a new chapter, one that takes him to a city with deep ties to Poland.
As many as one million members of the Polish diaspora live in the Chicago metro area, making the new signing impactful not just on a sporting level but on a cultural level as well.
Where Does Lewandowski Fit Tactically?
Understandably, the excitement over the new signing is through the roof. However, bringing in Lewandowski does create a tactical dilemma for Fire head coach Gregg Berhalter. The club’s current no. 9, Hugo Cuypers, is having an outstanding 2026 season. The Belgian striker registered 13 goals in 12 league games heading into the World Cup break.
It’s unthinkable for Cuypers to drop out of the starting lineup any time soon. He’s been unstoppable and occupies a DP slot himself. It would be equally mindboggling to imagine a global superstar like Lewandowski getting benched. He’s proven that he still has his shooting boots on and will be eager to show his quality to American fans.
Berhalter and his assistants will thus head to the drawing board, likely looking to accommodate both Cuypers and Lewandowski. The Men in Red have used a two-man strike force before, usually in the absence of Cuypers, and with mixed outcomes. Likely, the side will initially line up in a 3-4-1-2 or 4-2-2-2 layout and attempt to create a potent partnership between the two goal scorers. Whether such a formation will stick remains to be seen.
Star Power on the Horizon
The Fire are finally reaping the rewards of their ambitious transfer policy. Lewandowski is arguably the biggest name to ever put on the red strip. The club has shown signs that this is just the beginning.
Recent reports suggest that Chicago is hoping to bring in Bayern midfielder Leon Goretzka in the coming weeks.
Could a reunion between the 31-year-old and his former teammate Lewandowski be in the cards?
