Philip Zinckernagel Represents Fire as All-Star Festivities Commence
For a player that was brought in for less than $1 million, Philip Zinckernagel has turned out alright.
The Chicago Fire’s ever-reliable attacking midfielder is headed to his second straight MLS All-Star Game.
The Dane steps in as a last-minute addition after injuries and transfers ruled out four players at the eleventh hour.
It’s an opportunity for the 31-year-old to build on his last appearance in the event.
Coming off the bench at the 2025 iteration in Austin, Zinckernagel delivered a fine assist in the MLS All-Stars’ 3-1 victory over the Liga MX All-Stars. Now, it’s off to Charlotte for another go.
Carrying the (Withering) Flame
The announcement that Zinckernagel would be heading to the All-Star Game was bittersweet for Fire fans. On the one hand, it offers a chance to see Chicago’s playmaking magician team up with Heung-Min Son, Thomas Muller, and company. Unfortunately, it comes at the expense of one current and one former teammate.
Originally, two Fire players got the call: Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Hugo Cuypers. Mbokazi, a standout in South Africa’s World Cup run, led the fan voting, buoyed by the passionate Bafana Bafana fanbase. Cuypers, meanwhile, was a no-brainer selection, after scoring 13 goals in 12 games heading into the summer break.
Together, the duo would make this the first year with multiple All-Star selections from the Fire since 2017.
It simply wasn’t meant to be, however. Mbokazi tore a muscle in his thigh just last week, ruling him out for at least six weeks. Cuypers, of course, controversially departed for Monterrey in the wake of Robert Lewandowski’s arrival in Chicago. What with the loss of the two stars and back-to-back defeats to start the proverbial second half of the season, it’s been a bleak few weeks for the Men in Red. Zinckernagel’s All-Star selection offers some silver lining.
Zinck in the Queen City
While he hasn’t been quite as impactful as in his debut campaign, Zinckernagel’s stats in 2026 are nothing to be ashamed of. He has scored five goals and dished out eight assists in 18 appearances this year. These numbers caught the eye of MLS commissioner Don Garber, who seems to have chosen Zinckernagel as a direct replacement for Lionel Messi.
If the Fire’s creative force does appear in Charlotte, it will likely be off the bench. Last year, he entered in the 61st minute, assisting Brian White’s insurance goal 19 minutes later. As with any All-Star Game, the player rotation strategy is still a question mark. Charlotte FC head coach Dean Smith, who will manage the MLS team, is allowed unlimited substitutions. His predecessors have often opted to give every rostered player minutes in the game.
In any case, it’ll be worth tuning in, as MLS looks to channel World Cup-induced excitement into a successful event in North Carolina. Zinckernagel and the rest of North America’s finest take to the pitch at Bank of America Stadium on Wednesday night.
