As we all know this is a huge off season for the Chicago Bears. The team has plenty on its plate with the first overall pick in the draft and well over $100 million in cap space going into the next season. On top of that like with any team not only are there decisions to be made picking up players but there’s some you need to consider whether you’ll keep or not. Here I want to look at some of the Bears’s key players set to hit free agency and what I feel is the right move for them.
The new guy most every Bears fan is talking about here is RB David Montgomery. The Bears drafted Montgomery back in 2019 out of Iowa State University. In his four years in Chicago he has amassed 3,609 rushing yards, 26 rushing touchdowns, on top of 1,240 receiving yards and 4 receiving touchdowns. The 25 year old has certainly been a great addition to the offense. Has he been good enough to get an extension though? For the most part RBs are a dime a dozen, unless you’ve got an elite rusher. The thing with Montgomery is he’s just kind of teetering that line. Not to mention he’s now splitting Reps with Khalil Herbert, who’s looked very good out there himself. I love him as a player, but feel he’s worth resigning only if he takes a fairly modest contract.
Next we have a player who is a pretty new addition to the team. Nicholas Morrow joined the Bears going into this last season. In his one year here he led the team in tackles with 116 combined (83 solo and 33 assisted). He ended up being one of the bigger additions to the team under the new regime. Being only 27 years old and playing a position of need at a pretty high level he’s made his way into the key free agent discussion. His last deal was for only 1 year/$3 million and if a similar deal can be made he’s absolutely worth it in my opinion.
Finally I want to look at a few players real quick. Many of the WR signed by Poles last year were on one year deals. So which of those guys are worth bringing back? The team has already resigned Equinimeous St. Brown to a 1 year/$1.25 million contract. A cheap deal for a player who proved to be a solid run blocker, though a bit of a disappointment in the passing game. So that leads you to wonder about the remaining guys. Dante Pettis, N’Keal Harry, and Byron Pringle are all slated to become free agents. The player there that intrigues me the most is Harry. He’s a big and physical WR who I feel was under utilized. To me his traits and potential are reason enough to resign him to a small contract. The others don’t excite me as much. Pringle missed much of the year due to injury and never really wowed me when he did play. On the other hand Pettis showed some flashes, but also had some moments where he looked a little questionable out there in the hands department. I’d be ok with letting Pringle and Pettis walk. Pettis could be worth a small extension thanks to his return abilities but there’s certainly other guys that can fill that spot.
Those are just some of the players in Chicago set to hit the free agent market of course. There are many others looking to continue their NFL dream. What happens to those guys as well as the key players noted here is yet to be determined. As I said, this is a big off season for the Bears on every front. They have a lot to look at in the draft and in the free agent market.
