The Bulls Lose to Finish 2022

The Chicago Bulls would lose to the Cavaliers on New Year’s Eve to finish the year. The contest came down to the wire, where Demar DeRozan would have a game winning attempt with just seconds to go in the fourth quarter. DeRozan’s attempt would be off target, but the NBA would later reveal that he was fouled on his game winning attempt, and should have been awarded two free throws. Despite the NBA stating this, the game result stands, and the Bulls failed to convert multiple attempts in the clutch.

Donovan Mitchell’s Historic Performance

In the second game against the Cavaliers, Donovan Mitchell would become just the 7th player in NBA history to record 70+ points in a single game. Donovan Mitchell finished the game with 71 points, 11 assists, and 8 rebounds, having the first 70 & 10 game in NBA history. The Bulls led the game late in the fourth quarter, hanging onto a 3 point lead with just seconds to play, but Donovan Mitchell would miss, and score off his free throw attempt to force overtime. The Donovan Mitchell show would continue into overtime, while the Bulls only manged to score 4 points in the period, leading to a Cavaliers win. Mitchell’s 71 points are the most points scored by a player in a single game against the Chicago Bulls.

Failing to Convert in the Clutch

The Chicago Bulls would have an opportunity to win the game in the fourth quarter after Donovan Mitchell’s game tying score. The Bulls would go to DeMar DeRozan, who would miss at the buzzer. Cavaliers guard Caris Levert would state post game that everyone knew that DeRozan would be getting the ball in that situation. Billy Donovan has continuously put the ball in DeRozan’s hands in game winning opportunities, while it has typically worked out, teams are figuring it out and sending doubles at DeMar leading to a tough shot attempt. The Bulls have two other all-star caliber players in Zach LaVine and Nikola Vucevic, who have proven to have the ability to hit clutch shots. Billy Donovan must turn to these players to throw the opposition off with a look they were not expecting.
